Industrial Internet of Things: Challenges and Prospects

Scope of the Papers

The Internet of Things (IoT) interconnection of a wide variety of devices of any size, at any distance, and providing performances similar like those in wired networks, has posed a strict requirements in terms of data transmission reliability, energy efficiency, throughput, and delay bounds. Industry 4.0 aims to boost traditional industrial manufacturing and production to a new generation of cyber-physical systems for building smart industrial environments. The concept of deterministic wireless networking, particularly important for industrial IoT (IIoT) networks, assumes precise clock synchronization and flow scheduling, optimized bandwidth usage, and advanced Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees both for data and control traffic. To provide solutions to these requirements, a broad research community and industry are involved in emerging IIoT standardization activities.

The technological breakthroughs of the last decade will also bring advances to the IIoT through increased network agility and resource management, empowered by machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and new types of applications. This Special Session will present the recent advances, as well as challenges and open issues in this broad IIoT field with respect to the theoretical foundations and practical applications.

Prospective authors are cordially invited to submit their original manuscripts on topics including but not limited to:

  • Efficient communication protocols for IIoT systems
  • Emerging enabling technologies for IIoT systems
  • Industrial wireless networks for IIoT systems
  • Modeling, simulation and experimentation for IIoT systems
  • Architectures of IIoT systems
  • Industrial IoT applications

  • Cyber-physical approach for IIoT systems
  • Security and privacy issues in IIoT systems
  • ML and AI for IIoT systems
  • Software methodology in IIoT systems
  • Distributed control and optimization of IIoT systems

Submission Guidelines

This Special Session will feature both invited papers and papers from an open call. Full papers and short papers/extended abstracts as defined below can be submitted.

Full Papers: Full paper submissions of original work (not previously published, or under review at another conference or journal) must not be longer than five pages and will be published in the conference proceedings.

Short Papers and Extended Abstracts: Submissions must not be longer than two pages. They should convince the reader that the author(s) would give an exciting presentation and stimulate lively discussion (will be published in the conference proceedings). Note that it is fully expected that extended abstract papers accepted for the session will eventually be extended as full papers suitable for formal academic publication and presentation at other conferences/publications.

Please use the IEEE template as described here. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and submitted to IEEE Xplore (approval pending).
